‘세상을 어떻게 보는가’ 하는 것은 예술에 있어서, 더 나아가 학문 일반에 있어서, 가장 중요한 요소라고 생각한다. 그러나 그것은 자신이 그리고 있는 대상-무엇을 보고 있는가-에 달려있는 것이 아니라, 자신이 소유하고 있는 관점-어떻게 보고 있는가-에 달려있다. 한마디로, 예술은 ‘이것’ 또는 ‘저것’인데, 그것은 ‘이것과 저것’ 바로 그 ‘사이’에 놓여있다.
허유(b.1988)는 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 시각 예술가로, 대학에서 동양화와 철학을 전공하고 이후 인간의 삶에 관한 주제를 추상적인 시각 언어로 풀어내고 있다. 주로 인식론, 인지, 존재, 관계, 상대성 등에 깊은 관심을 가지고 우리가 세상을 인식하는 방식과 그에 대한 확신에 관해 질문을 던진다. 최근에는 인식하는 방식으로서 ‘관점’에 특히 초점을 두고 작업을 진행하고 있다. 평면에 그려진 형상이지만 즉각적으로 인식되지 않기를 바라며 그 안에서 약간의 착시 또는 운동성을 경험할 수 있기를 바란다. 점이나 선 등 가장 기본적인 요소에 충실하면서도 다층적인 형상을 통해 감각적인 깊이를 표현하고 있다. 평소 대상에 대한 다양한 인식적 위트를 좋아하며 관심있는 주제를 표현하는 데 있어서 페인팅, 사진, 설치, 글, 그 어떤 방식도 가리지 않고 사용하는 것을 즐긴다.

I believe that “how to look at the world” is the central element of art, and furthermore, studies in general. However, it depends not on the object which oneself draws — what one looks at — but on one’s point of view — how one looks at the objects. In other words, art is “this” or “that,” and it indeed lies between “this and that.”
Heoyu (b.1988) is a visual artist based in Seoul. She studied Asian painting and philosophy at university and now explores themes related to human life through abstract visual language. She is particularly interested in epistemology, cognition, existence, relationships, and relativity, and she questions how we perceive the world and the certainty of those perceptions. Recently, her work has focused on the concept of "perspective" as a way of seeing. She aims for her two-dimensional works to avoid immediate recognition, inviting viewers to experience slight optical illusions or a sense of movement. By focusing on basic elements like dots and lines, she conveys sensory depth through multilayered forms. She enjoys the cognitive wit involved in perceiving subjects in various ways and delights in using any medium—painting, photography, installation, writing—to express her interests.
